NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — Lee County law enforcement investigators are examining the evidence from the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash on U.S. 41 in North Fort Myers, Florida according to WINK.com. Authorities said that a 64-year-old man was killed in a collision with a motor vehicle. The locus of the crash was determined to be the North Tamiami Trail, also known as U.S. Route 41, and Crescent Lake Drive. The Florida Highway Patrol identified a preliminary cause of the accident. However, their final analysis and report will not be completed for some time.
The initial findings of the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that the male victim attempted to cross North Tamiami Trail, headed west to east when a 2010 Toyota Camry occupied by a driver and two passengers crashed into the 64-year-old man. The male victim was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. Physicians at the hospital declared that the male victim perished from his injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol did not indicate the nature of the injuries the male victim suffered.
Law enforcement officers said that the collision took place around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3rd, 2019. The North Tamiami Trail at the intersection of Crescent Lake Drive is three lanes of travel in each direction. Investigators did not say on what side of U.S. 41 the fatal crash happened. Crews were able to clear the roadway within a short amount of time.
According to Florida’s Integrated Report Exchange System, known as “FIRES,” 116 pedestrians have died in vehicle accidents to this point in 2019 in Florida. FIRES recorded 1,530 pedestrian accidents throughout the state. In total, Florida motorists were involved in 60,797 accidents as of the first couple of days into March of 2019. Over 25,000 accidents resulted in injuries and 390 crashes were fatalities. These are just preliminary figures. The official 2019 statistics will not be made available for some time.
