Fatal pedestrian crash in Spring Valley
SPRING VALLEY, NY – According to Westchester.news12.com, a fatal pedestrian crash took place in Spring Valley in Rockland County on Thursday, January 3, 2019. The incident led to the death of 72-year-old Susanne Noel.
According to the Ramapo police, the vehicle hit Noel at about 8:30 in the evening on West Eckerson Road. Witnesses in the area said that the victim often went to the 7-11 and the gas station located nearby and purchased lottery tickets.
A woman was driving the vehicle that struck Noel. The woman remained at the site of the accident and made the call to 911 to report the incident. Reports do not say whether the driver has been charged with anything.
The incident shut down West Eckerson Road for a few hours while the investigation was carried out.
Pedestrian crashes have been rising across the country. In New York City, the Vision Zero plans have shown the ability to reduce the number of pedestrians killed by motor vehicles indicating that despite the upward trend seen nationally, there are plenty of steps that can be taken to reduce the number of pedestrian deaths. Reducing the speed limit is a really good way to lower the chances of a pedestrian being killed in an accident. Safety advocates around the country have been pushing to have 20 miles per hour speed limits implemented in areas trafficked by pedestrians. When vehicles travel at 20 miles per hour, the risk of an accident happening is reduced, and if a person is struck, they have a low risk of being fatally injured. The chances of surviving a pedestrian incident dwindle as the speed of the vehicle increases.
