Hit and run accident in Brooklyn
STATEN ISLAND, NY – As reported online by www.silive.com, a 49-year-old woman has been arrested and faces multiple criminal charges for striking and injuring a teenager in a Brooklyn accident, and then fleeing the scene of the accident.
A 49-year-old Staten Island woman slammed her Dodge Challenger into a teenage pedestrian in Borough Park. Video released by the New York Police Department (NYPD) shows the teen flying through the air after being struck by a car. The teenager landed on asphalt and was nearly hit by a second vehicle. After striking the teenager, the woman stepped outside of the car and briefly spoke with her victim. She then fled the scene of the accident, leaving the seriously injured teenager without calling for help. A waitress at a nearby restaurant called 911 and the teenage victim was taken to Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn for treatment.
The 49-year-old woman faces multiple criminal charges for her conduct, including (1) leaving the scene of an accident with injury, (2) reckless endangerment, (3) assault, (4) reckless driving, (5) failure to yield to a pedestrian, (6) failure to exercise due care, and (7) speeding.
The criminal consequences of fleeing the scene of an accident (especially when a person has been injured) are not the only consequences a hit-and-run driver needs to worry about. The teenager who sustained injuries may wish to pursue legal action against the 49-year-old woman by filing a lawsuit. The woman would potentially be liable for the teenager’s injuries, and therefore, may be forced to compensate the teenager either through an insurance policy or from her own pocket.
