CASTLETON CORNERS, Staten Island, N.Y. — Investigators from the New York City Police Department continue to search for the driver of an auto that mowed down and killed an 89-year-old woman who was walking in a crosswalk. NYPD accident investigators say that they have identified the make and model of the vehicle involved after reviewing surveillance video from cameras in the area of the crash. NYPD has not made any arrests in connection with the fatal hit-and-run accident that happened on Saturday, April 20, 2019, around 10:30 p.m. according to the US News and World Report.
NYPD officers reported that the 89-year-old Staten Island woman was struck and killed while walking across the intersection of Bradley and Purdy Avenues in Castleton Corners. Officers said the woman who died was in the crosswalk when she was hit. The driver of the vehicle responsible for the crash sped away from the scene. WPIX 11 reported that the officers who responded to the 911 call found the woman suffering from massive head trauma and trauma across her body. The woman was unresponsive to stimuli as well. EMS transported the stricken woman to Richmond University Medical Center. Physicians were unable to save her. WPIX noted that the woman was about one block away from her home when she was struck.
Initially, witnesses told the investigating officers that a dark-colored sedan hit the pedestrian. Investigators turned up a substantial lead in the case when they found a surveillance video of the car they believe is the vehicle that struck the woman. Officers released the surveillance video of the vehicle they believe is involved in the crash. Police described the auto as a Toyota Sienna, with colors described as “two-tone.” Police say the Sienna, which is a mini-van, is an older model. Police said they would continue to pursue the responsible party. However, they have not made any arrests in the case as of this time.
