CASTLE HILL, NY – According to Abc7ny.com, a school bus hit and killed a woman in the Bronx on Thursday, February 14, 2019. The crash took place at the intersection of Havemeyer and Story in Castle Hill at a little before 10 in the morning.
The victim, a 68-year-old woman, was reportedly in critical condition when she was transported to the Jacobi Hospital. Later, she was declared dead.
The bus left the scene after hitting the woman. Early reports have not indicated whether the driver knew that he or she hit the victim or not.
Locals say that the area is dangerous for pedestrians in part because of the nearby bus depots. There are signs in the area that say, “No Buses” and yet many people in the area report that they frequently see buses violating the rules.
The accident was caught on video, and the victim can be seen using the crosswalk just before the crash.
A witness said she saw the bus leave after hitting the victim. Another driver said that he stopped and exited his vehicle when he saw the woman lying on the street.
Police have not yet made any arrests in connection to the deadly crash.
School buses are often described as some of the safest vehicles on the road. The safety standards for school buses far exceed those set for other types of vehicles and buses. However, most of the safety features are designed to protect the passengers on the buses, and not people in other vehicles or pedestrians. Larger vehicles often have limited visibility making them more challenging to drive safely through areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
