STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — SILIVE.comreported that a man pleaded guilty to manslaughter for killing a pedestrian on Staten Island on June 29, 2018. A judge accepted the man’s guilty plea on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, in the Supreme Court in St. George. The man will receive a lengthy period of incarceration which will be on July 10, 2019. The now convicted man remains free on bond while he awaits sentencing.
A judge sitting in the state Supreme Court located in St. George took the man’s plea of guilty Wednesday. In consideration of his guilty plea, the man now faces a minimum of 30 months up to as many as 90 months of incarcerated time for killing a pedestrian last June. The allegations presented by the Staten Island District Attorney’s Office claim that the 41-year-old man recklessly drove southerly on Bay Street and overtook a car on the left while driving at nearly 100 miles per hour. The maximum legal speed is 25 miles per hour. While passing, the defendant lost control over his vehicle, went into the northbound lane, and went over the median strip where he struck a woman and killed her. The defendant continued southerly on Bay Street for another block and then turned right onto Clinton Street.
NYPD investigators eventually identified and captured the driver. They charged the man with a seven-count indictment with charges including second-degree manslaughter, recklessly endangering another, reckless driving, leaving the scene, and assault.
The District Attorney said that he was pleased the defendant pleaded guilty to the most serious count and reiterated his commitment to making the streets of Staten Island a safer place. The attorney for the accused said that the man had never been charged with a crime before but added that the tragic accident occurred because the client was speeding.
