Pedestrian dies in Brentwood
BRENTWOOD, NY – According to Longisland.news12.com, a person was killed in a pedestrian incident in Brentwood on Friday, December 28, 2018. The victim was crossing the street Grant and Suffolk Avenues and was first hit by a car’s mirror before falling over and being struck a second time. The second vehicle, a Ford Escape, ran the victim over. Both of the drivers remained at the site of the crash, and no charges have been filed.
The identity of the pedestrian has not been released.
Deadly pedestrian crashes are on the rise in the United States. As sales of SUVs rise, some feel that pedestrians are being put at a greater risk of being killed in accidents. When a car strikes a person, it often hits them in their legs and lower body parts, but when an SUV strikes a person, it hits them higher on the body and causes more serious injuries.
One of the best ways to reduce pedestrian deaths is to lower speed limits. Many pedestrian safety advocates promote a 20 miles per hour speed limit in areas where there is a lot of foot traffic. The likelihood of a person surviving being struck by a vehicle that is traveling 20 miles per hour is high, but as the speed of a vehicle increases, the chances of a person surviving drop.
While vehicles have become safer for vehicle occupants, the improvements have not been designed to help pedestrians. Fortunately, newer technology can identify pedestrians and vehicles could soon be able to alert a driver when a person is nearby or could apply the brakes automatically is an accident is imminent.
