Staten Island pedestrian accident
STATEN ISLAND, NY – According to Silive.com, Staten Island experienced a jump in the number of pedestrian accidents in January of 2019 over last year. In 2018, 24 pedestrians were hurt in traffic accidents in Staten Island between January 1st and February 3rd. Within the same time frame in 2019, there were 49 injuries.
Only Staten Island and Queens experienced higher numbers of pedestrian incidents this year over last year, but in Staten Island, the increase amounted to greater than 100 percent. The increase in Queens was comparatively modest, with only a 15 percent rise in injured pedestrians.
The city’s other boroughs saw a decrease of 3 percent or more this year.
The North Shore is where the largest number of accidents have occurred. The same area was found to be the most dangerous last year. The leading cause of accidents was driver inattention followed by failure to yield. In comparing collisions in 2018 and 2019, a larger percentage of the collisions occurred this year.
The statistics indicate the disparity between various parts of the city. While traffic-related fatalities are down across the city, the improvements are not the same across all areas.
In 2017, New York had fewer pedestrian deaths than in any year on record. In 2018, that number increased by only a small amount but remained much lower than when the program was instituted. If the city is going to meet its objective to eliminate all traffic-related deaths, there are certain areas, including those in Staten Island, that need to be the focus of intersection design efforts and other safety improvement methods.
