Fatal Manhattan pedestrian accident

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK – According to an online news article published by nypost.com, a woman was struck and killed by a pickup truck in Chelsea.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) reports that a 67-year-old woman was struck and killed while attempting to cross the street in Chelsea.

The late evening accident happened near the intersection of West 15th Street and Sixth Avenue, when the deceased victim, along with a 59-year-old woman, were struck by a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, which was attempting to make a left turn.

The 67-year-old woman was transported to Bellevue Hospital with critical injuries where she died 2 days later.  The 59-year-old woman was also transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of a cut to the back of the head and was listed as being in stable condition.

According to police, the 32-year-old driver of the Silverado pickup truck, who remained at the scene of the accident, had a green light.  The driver has not been charged with any crime at this point, and the investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Avoiding Pedestrian Accidents – What Drivers Can Do

Manhattan, without question, is a place full of pedestrians.  While many intersections in Manhattan do have crosswalks and signals for pedestrians and drivers, pedestrians are still at risk of being involved in an accident, especially given the immense amount of foot traffic that seems to exist at all times of the day and night.

Drivers can help both themselves and pedestrians by taking extra precautions when driving in busy areas like Manhattan.  Even if a driver has the right-of-way, such as a green light, that driver can still take measures to avoid being involved in an accident.  Such measures include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Slow down when attempting to make a right or left turn at an intersection (whether there is a traffic light or not);
  • Look for pedestrians before turning, even if a driver has the right-of-way;
  • Drive at or below the speed limit as Manhattan will always be busy and congested; and
  • Be especially cautious at night when visibility is low, and it is difficult to see pedestrians.

Pedestrians should also be extra careful when crossing the street and only cross when they have the right-of-way.
