Unlicensed teenage driver
BAY SHORE, NY – According to Longisland.com, a pedestrian was seriously injured in a crash in Bay Shore on February 16, 2019. The victim was a 58-year-old man who was crossing from the south to the north side of Union Boulevard.
A 16-year-old was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Impala that was traveling westbound at about 6:10 in the evening.
The victim was taken to the Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. Reports indicate that the pedestrian suffered severe injuries.
The 16-year-old driver was in the vehicle with two 15-year-old boys as passengers. The driver was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license.
Police are looking for information about the crash.
Teenage drivers tend to have higher crash rates. In fact, 16-year-olds have the highest crash rate of any age group. Teens tend to use their phones while driving frequently, and about 56 percent admit to speaking on the phone while operating a vehicle. Studies indicate that the chances of being in a car accident are twice as high when a person is on their phone. Teens who are in a vehicle with other teens are also at a greater risk of being involved in an accident.
In New York City, the Vision Zero initiative has helped to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities that take place on the city’s streets, but there are still many pedestrian crashes throughout the city each year. Unfortunately, after reaching an all-time low in 2017, pedestrian deaths in the city increased slightly in 2019.
While New York’s traffic safety efforts have shown results, the city has much to do before it reaches zero traffic fatalities.
