Woman killed in pedestrian incident
SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY – According to Newsday.com, a woman died in a pedestrian crash on Rocky Point Road in Suffolk County, New York. The accident took place in Middle Island.
The victim, a 46-year-old woman, was struck near Baily Road. The vehicle that hit her was a Kia sedan. The driver, 20-year-old Morning Yancey was issued a summons after it was determined that she was driving on a suspended license.
The Kia hit the victim with such intense force that she was thrown into a 200 Dodge sedan that was stopped at the time. The victim, whose name has not yet been reported, was declared dead at the crash site.
The 20-year-old driver of the Dodge, Liam Toman, did not suffer any injuries.
Police are now asking the public for information related to the accident.
Pedestrian accidents are a common occurrence in the United States where 6,000 people died after being struck by vehicles last year. The previous year, 2016, about 6,000 people died in pedestrian crashes as well. Pedestrian crashes are more likely at night. Likely, visibility plays a role in causing these accidents, but another frequent contributing factor in these accidents is alcohol consumption. In about one in three fatal pedestrian crashes, the driver or the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the occurrence.In a higher percent of these accidents, the pedestrian is the one who had a blood alcohol concentration that was higher than the legal limit, which is .08 percent.
Another major factor is the speed at which a vehicle is traveling. People are rarely killed by vehicles that were traveling at or below 20 miles per hour. The chances of surviving decrease as the vehicle’s speed increases.
