RICHMOND, VA – According to a nbc12.com news report, recall letters sent to owners of cars that have a potentially deadly airbag defect are largely ignored. The news report states that about 11 million motor vehicles manufactured between 2002 to 2015 still have a potentially fatal Takata airbag within the vehicle’s steering wheel or on the passenger side. The defect is very dangerous because when the defective airbag is deployed, the inflators can rupture and send metal fragments into the neck and face region of front-seat occupants.
The Takata airbag recall is the largest automotive recall in U.S. history and involving over 100 million inflators. The recall affects 19 automakers. So far, twenty-seven people have been killed by the defect, and 300 people have sustained serious injuries.
Older motor vehicles that are exposed to hot, humid conditions can be especially more hazardous or more likely to cause injury during deployment.
