WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on March 8, 2021, that Mediterranean Food Inc had initiated a recall of its Alqosh Sesame Oil due to a potential health risk. Mediterranean Food Inc. of Warren, Michigan, initiated a recall of its two-pound plastic jar of “Alqosh Sesame Oil” due to a potential of Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is a micro-organism that can cause severe and may cause fatal infections in small children, elderly people, or those who have weakened immune systems. The side effects experienced by healthy people exposed to Salmonella include diarrhea (which could be bloody), fever, vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain. In some circumstances, the Salmonella organism could enter into the bloodstream producing more severe illnesses such as arthritis, arterial infections, infected aneurysms, and endocarditis.
The affected “Sesame Oil” was distributed to Michigan retail stores and distributors and was distributed from 11/06/2020 to 12/10/2020. The Alqosh Sesame Oil is packaged in a two-pound, clear plastic jar marked with a Production date of 08/16/2020 and a lot # 16082020 on the side of the jar.
The possible Salmonella contamination was discovered during routine testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). The sample was sold at a retail store, and testing revealed Salmonella’s presence in the two-pound plastic jar of “Sesame Oil.”
Production of the Alqosh Sesame Oil product was also halted as the FDA and Mediterranean Food Inc conduct their investigations into the problem’s source.
Purchasers of the Alqosh Sesame Oil “Tahin” 2-Lb plastic jar with the lot #16082020 are urged not to consume the oil product and to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
