Banana Boat Sunscreen Recalled Due to Cancer-Linked Benzene Contamination

According to a news report posted on Goodhousekeeping.com, traces of cancer-causing Benzene have been discovered in Banana Boat sunscreen. The manufacturer, Edgewell Personal Care Company, issued a voluntary recall of three separate batches of their Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray after it found traces of Benzene in the products.
Customers who purchased the recalled sunscreen products are urged to immediately throw the product in the trash and request a refund from the Banana Boat through its website. This Banana Boat sunscreen recall is the latest Benzene contamination-related recall since the massive recall of sunscreen and deodorant product recalls back in 2021.
Benzene is harmful to human health when the chemical is inhaled, consumed, or absorbed through the skin repeatedly over an extended period of time. The level of contamination can increase as the product ages. In many cases, people who purchase sunscreen will store the partially used products for several summers.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recall notice states that Edgewell Personal Care Co. issued the nationwide recall last Friday and it concerns three lots of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30. According to the recall announcement, a company internal review discovered that several samples of the product had “trace levels” of Benzene, which is a known carcinogen. Health experts have established that Benzene increases a person’s “cancer risk over time and with repeated exposure.”
The recalled batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30, 6oz include the following expiration dates and lot codes that are printed on the bottom of the products’ can:
- Lot code 20016AF with an expiration of December 2022
- Lot code 20084BF with an expiration of February 2023
- Lot code 21139AF with an expiration of April 2024
Customers who purchased the affected products should immediately stop using the products and throw them in the trash, the FDA advises. So far, Edgewell hasn’t received any complaints concerning the recalled products and the company is conducting the recall “out of an abundance of caution.” Edgewell is offering reimbursement to customers who purchased the recalled products when they visit the Banana Boat website and fill out a reimbursement form.
Benzene is not an ingredient in sunscreen or deodorant. The colorless chemical is a byproduct of the manufacturing process. The FDA advises those who are experiencing issues or side effects should speak with their doctor.
