Playground Equipment Can Lead to Severe Injuries

Playground equipment lawsuits
TAMPA, FLORIDA – According to President of EMR Safety and Health Sherri Wilson, a typical sunny summer day can make some playground equipment “dangerously hot.” A news report posted on wtsp.com states that child safety advocates are warning parents about dangerous playground equipment. The safety advocates report that an 80-degree day can heat up some plastic slides to over 160 degrees Fahrenheit, while pavement, chains on swings, metal railings, and other playground parts can become even hotter. Sherri Wilson stated that this time of the year is when a majority of these injuries occur. ”
The news report offers a few tips to protect your children from burns, broken bones, head fractures, and other severe playground injuries.
- Touch the playground surfaces before your child does.
- Visit playgrounds that offer lots of shade.
- Keep your children’s legs and feet covered.
- Check playground equipment for recalled equipment.
- Visit the playground earlier or later in the day.
- Go to playgrounds that have equipment with light-colored surfaces.
- Caution your children to wait until you have first checked the equipment temperature.
Safety experts say that it does not take a long time for a serious injury to occur. Sherry Wilson stated that a hot slide could cause a second-degree burn in just three seconds and a third-degree burn in just five minutes.
In 2019, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that over 200 McDonald’s restaurants across the country were recalling a Spider Climb playground piece after the CPSC received 34 reports of children sustaining injuries associated with the Spider Climb platforms.
The CPSC is a government agency tasked with protecting the public from dangerous products. Over the past four decades, the CPSC has lowered the number of deaths, injuries, and amount of property damage caused by defective products.
Last year, BCI Burke’s playground climbing structures were recalled due to a defect that posed a dangerous entrapment hazard, according to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (recall number 20-044). On occasion, companies manufacture products that present safety hazards that went undetected prior to the product being put on the market.
