BALTIMORE – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized a shipment of approximately 600 pink girl’s bicycles in Baltimore, Maryland, because the bikes were coated in harmful lead paint.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission investigators seized the Dripe-X Girl’s Bicycles on December 29, 2020, after the bikes’ paint tested positive for very high levels of lead.
The CBP officers and one CPSC investigator first questioned the shipment of Chinese-made Dripe-X brand girls’ bicycles back on September 21, 2020. A CPSC investigator decided to take paint samples from bikes in the shipment and have the paint tested for toxic substances. The CPSC investigator asked the CBP officers to hold onto the shipment until the test results were examined. On December 1, 2020, the paint test results revealed that the bicycles’ paint contained high levels of lead paint.
On December 29, 2020, the CPSC investigator asked the CBP officers to seize the shipment of bikes for violating the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. This federal law regulates the use and laws pertaining to lead paint. The seized bicycles to be delivered to an address in San Bernardino County, California. The appraised value for the bicycle is approximately $84,000.
According to Keith Fleming, the CBP’s Field Operations Acting Director in Baltimore stated that the Customs and Border Protection and their partners with the CPSC take their mission of protecting our nation’s citizens very seriously. In this case, the agencies worked together to prevent a potentially dangerous import that may have been harmful to children. Consumers are encouraged to visit SaferProducts.gov to see if any products purchased are unsafe. The website also offers recall reports and alerts consumers to dangerous products.
