According to a news report posted on kxnet.com, salad manufacturer Fresh Express has issued a voluntary recall of some varieties of their packaged salad products due to potential listeria contamination. So far, the recall has been issued in 19 states and parts of Canada. The outbreak has tragically killed one person.
Frank Yiannas, FDA Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response Frank Yiannas, stated in a media release that the FDA, CDC, and several state and local agencies are investigating a multistate Listeria monocytogenes outbreak. Currently, one sample of Fresh Express Sweet Hearts salad mix tested positive and matched the outbreak strain. Mr. Yiannas reported that several people had been sickened by the Listeria monocytogenes strain across eight states. The states include Virginia, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
Fresh Express issued the recall after the Michigan Department of Agriculture issued a report that states the agency detected listeria during a random sample test of a Sweet Hearts salad mix.
The signs and symptoms of listeriosis include chills, fever, muscle aches, upset stomach, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, loss of balance, and confusion. According to the CDC, pregnant women are ten times more likely to get listeriosis, and the disease could cause stillbirth, premature labor, or miscarriage.
The affected salad products have the product codes Z324 through Z350 printed on the packaging. Consumers who have the recalled products are urged to throw them away. The complete list of recalled salad products can be found on the FDA’s website – click here.
