TrueSTEAM Humidifiers Allegedly Defective, Allow Mineral Buildup

Honeywell markets its humidifiers as a source of “whole home humidification” and are claimed to provide “the high performance and efficiency of steam humidification with easier maintenance than traditional humidifiers.” However, reports indicate that these products do not live up to these marketing claims.

A class action lawsuit filed in Massachusetts alleges that the humidifiers are unreliable, difficult to maintain, and wholly defective. Allegedly, the humidifiers become caked with mineral deposits and scaling within a short period of time. The lawsuit alleges that this may lead to overheating and blockages, which may cause subsequent overflow of scalding water; the alleged defect may also cause the components of the humidifier to crack. Plaintiffs and other customers have suffered property damage and have spent money to repair or replace their defective Honeywell Humidifiers, the lawsuit alleges.

According to the lawsuit, the sediment buildup may clog exterior drains and lead to flooding. Honeywell Humidifiers are allegedly designed in a manner that causes steam to be blown into the HVAC duct system; the resulting condensation may cause mold and fungus growth, thereby lowering air quality. This defect may also corrode the duct work itself.

Honeywell Humidifiers are sold with a 5-year limited warranty. This warranty implies that the product will be free from defects under normal use and service, and Honeywell will repair or replace the humidifier under specific circumstances. The warranty is not limited to a specific filter or water supply, the lawsuit notes. The lawsuit alleges that Honeywell was aware that the products would fail within the warranty period and has no intention of carrying out the services promised. Despite routine customer complaints, Honeywell allegedly utilizes a difficult and burdensome warranty claims process to avoid fulfilling its warranty.
