Jeep Liberty Ball Joint Excessive Wear And Looseness. On August 1, 2006 Chrysler Group recalled 832,000 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicles because of the potential loss of steering control. The front suspension lower ball joint might experience excessive wear and looseness, causing the ball joint to separate. The recall affects all Jeep Liberty SUVs from the 2002-2006 model years.
The automaker to date has received 111 complaints about the problem and 3 reports of injuries. Most of the complaints, describe the ball joint failing, which causes the vehicle’s front end to drop onto one or both of the front tires.
Prior Recall
This is not the first time a Jeep Liberty vehicle has been recalled due to the same problem. The automaker recalled more than 300,000 2002-2003 Liberty vehicles in November 2003 because of problems with the ball joints. During the first few months of 2006, the government imitated an investigation of the 2004 Liberty after receiving complaints about the ball joints separating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the alleged separations happened on Liberty’ with 25,000 miles to more than 67,000 miles.
