WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a recall notice stating that Kareem Mart has initiated a recall of its Kareem Chef “Halva” due to possible Salmonella contamination. On March 26, 2021, Kareem Mart announced that its brand Kareem Chef is recalling several flavors of its “Halva” Mediterranean food products. In the announcement, Kareem Mart of Garden City, Michigan, stated that the company was recalling its 1lb and 2lb Kareem Chef brand “Halva”, “Halva with Pistachio”, and “Halva with Chocolate” desserts due to potential Salmonella contamination.
Salmonella is a dangerous organism that can cause a fatal infection in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. The other side effects of salmonella poisoning include fever, nausea, diarrhea (which may be bloody), abdominal pain and, vomiting, and severe illnesses infections.
The recalled Kareem Chef “Halva” food products were sold at Mediterranean food wholesalers and stores in Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Ohio between March 2020 to February 2021. The recalled products come in 1lb and 2lb plastic tubs. The recall announcement only affects one lot that was distributed and had a “Best Before” date of 07-01-2022.
Consumers are warned not to eat the recalled product and immediately throw the food products in the trash, return to 32816 Manor Park Garden City MI 48135, or to the store where the products were purchased for a full refund.
The potential for salmonella contamination was discovered following some routine testing from samples obtained in retail food stores by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). Production of the product has been suspended as the FDA and Kareem Mart find the source of the contamination.
