Meijer Mixed Nuts Recalled Due to Undeclared, Dangerous Brazil Nut Ingredient
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Food and Drug Administration, FDA, and the Meijer food company jointly issued a statement regarding a recall of thousands of Meijer’s mixed nuts containers. Meijer and the FDA announced that Brazil nuts were found in some containers of the brand’s mixed nuts, without including Brazil nuts in the product description. Consuming a nut product unwittingly while suffering from an allergy to that particular type of nut could cause a life-threatening reaction. People who are allergic to nuts and eat one often experience anaphylactic shock and subsequent injury. Symptoms of an anaphylactic shock include swelling of the throat and tongue, closing of the throat, difficulty breathing, and could kill if treatment is not expedited.*
Meijer announced a recall initiative involving 13,284 containers of mixed nuts after tree nuts, specifically Brazil nuts, erroneously were included in the packages. The ingredients for Meijer’s mixed nut offering do not list any tree nuts generally and Brazil nuts specifically. Therefore, anyone with an allergy to Brazil nuts could fall deathly ill from an allergic reaction after unknowingly eating a Brazil nut, or even coming in contact with a Brazil nut.
The recalled mixed nut packages from Meijer are clear plastic containers and weigh 16 ounces. The Meijer brand label prominently appears on the package of recalled nuts along with additional relevant information such as the UPC and sell-by dates. The recalled packages have a UPC of 7-1928380863-9 and are labeled “Fresh from Meijer- Mixed Nuts with Peanuts & Sea Salt- 16 oz.” The products’ sell-by dates include 7-16-2020, 9-5-2020, and finally, 10-15-2020.
Anyone who bought a recalled product should discard the package immediately. Meijer indicates that no one should consume the recalled food if there is a Brazil nut allergy in the home. Consumers have the option of returning the unopened food to the store from which they purchased the food.
