NORTH AMERICA – According to an online news report on yorkregion.com, approximately 2,000 children’s bracelet and charm sets are being recalled because they might be “highly toxic.” The children’s jewelry sets were found to contain high levels of cadmium and lead, which cause a range of severe health effects such as serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, vomiting, anemia, diarrhea, as well as damage to the kidneys, heart, liver, and the immune system. In some rare cases, some people have died as a result of exposure to lead or cadmium.
The recall affects the Nebulous Stars – Mini Charm Sets plus all the individually packaged bracelets and charms sold in eight different styles. Each style includes one chain and seven charms that can be assembled.
The following product numbers are subject to the recall: 11555, 11556, 11557, 11558, 11559, 11560, 11561, and 11562.
The company urges purchasers to immediately remove the jewelry from their children. The company reported that 1,872 units of the affected products were sold in Canadian stores between January 2020 to March 2021. Purchasers may content the company through its website to obtain a full refund.
Government import agencies discovered the high levels of toxic substances during the sampling and evaluation program. The program concluded that the recalled jewelry contained levels of cadmium in excess of allowable limits. Lead and cadmium are highly toxic to children, and jewelry sold to children under the age of 15 years may not contain more than 130 mg/kg total cadmium.
