According to an online news story posted on medtruth.com reports that both Syngenta and Chevron could lose billions of dollars over Paraquat Parkinson’s Disease lawsuits. Paraquat, an herbicide, has been called “highly poisonous” by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disease that is characterized by uncontrollable tremors, muscle stiffness, and loss of balance. Paraquat is sold under the product name Gramoxone. Last August, the herbicide was reapproved for use by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Bloomberg states that new paraquat lawsuits are being filed on a daily basis since the first lawsuit was filed seven months ago. According to “U.S. Right to Know,” there have been approximately 160 lawsuits filed in state and federal courts since mid-June. The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) ruled that all paraquat lawsuits will be combined into the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois for all pre-trial proceedings. Judge Nancy J. Rosenstengel will oversee Multidistrict Litigation. The Panel decided on the Southern District of Illinois due to the area’s massive use of paraquat and due to the years of paraquat litigation in that district.
Paraquat is applied to corn, cotton, and soybean fields by agricultural workers and farmers. Because of paraquat’s toxicity risks, the herbicide was designated for “restricted use” and can only be applied by licensed paraquat applicators.
Recent research studies have revealed a link between paraquat (Gramoxone) and Parkinson’s disease.
According to an agricultural health study of American farmers managed by several U.S. government agencies, “exposure to certain agricultural pesticides can increase an individual’s risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.”
Syngenta, a Swiss agricultural science and technology company based in Basel, Switzerland, reported back in June that the company settled several paraquat suits for $187.5 million. In less than eight months, more than 400 paraquat lawsuits have been filed in federal court. Top litigation experts believe there could be tens of thousands of paraquat cases in the news few years. Experts also believe Chevron and Syngenta will pay out billions of dollars in paraquat verdicts and settlements due to judgments that have been upheld in recent Monsanto Roundup cases.
