New York – A New story posted on cnn.com reports that Peloton has announced that the company is recalling all of its treadmills due to “multiple reports of children becoming in trapped, pens, and pulled under“ the device. According to the recall Peloton is recalling its Tread+ and treadmills which accounts for approximately 125,000 total treadmills affected by the recall. In the company announcement, Peloton admitted that they were wrong to fight the Consumer Product Safety Commission‘s request to initiate the recall last month.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that there have been over 70 injuries and one fatality links to the treadmills. last month, the governmental safety agency issued a public warning about the dangers of Peloton treadmills. Typically, companies will initiate a recall after a governmental agency such as the FDA or the CPSC issues a product warning l especially if the issue may cause injuries or fatalities. In an unusual response, Peloton CEO fired back at the CPSC and refused to initiate a recall.
Peloton’s CEO John Foley, stated “I want to be clear, peloton made a mistake in our initial response to CPSC‘s request.“ peloton CEO then went on to state that their company apologizes for not being more engaged and productive with the CPSC at the onset.
According to the CPSC’s acting chairman Robert Adler, the CPSC had been in intense negotiations with peloton for several weeks. Mr. Adler than announced that they had reached a “cooperative“ agreement that he believes will serve the best interest of both the company and their customers.
The heated exchange between peloton and the consumer protection safety commission was ignited after the CPSC publicly released a video that showed a small boy playing with a powered on treadmill and as the treadmill lifted off of the ground, the child suddenly became pinned underneath the treadmill. The CPSC also released information regarding other situations that lead to the child being stuck underneath a Peloton treadmill while the exercise equipment was in use. The CPSC also stated that there was a potential for harm to any user should the user lose their balance while on the recalled treadmill. Those incident reports We’re made public mid-April 2021.
Peloton harshly refuted the CPSC‘s warning letter and stated that the agencies warning was “in accurate and misleading.“ The company has announced today that those comments were a mistake and the company desires to be an industry leader and product safety.
According to consumer reports, the peloton treadmill recall is “welcome news,“ but also stated that in delaying the recall they put customers in danger. In a previous statement, consumer reports stated that the initial response by peloton was “outrageous.”
Consumer reports manager of safety policy, William Wallace, stated in a news release that peloton should not have demanded so much time and effort to initiate the treadmill recall. Mr. Wallace also stated that the CPSC took a principal and strong stance for public safety, and this led to peloton‘s reversal and moving forward with and offer to give customers a full refund.
