Front-loading Washing Machine
A news article on mirror.co.uk reports that a pre-school-age child was tragically killed when the child climbed into front-loading clothes washing machine that was accidentally turned on with the small child inside. The child was discovered later and was unresponsive in the clothes washing machine.
A spokesperson stated that law enforcement officers were called out to the fatal accident at around 5 pm on Friday. According to the news report, the child was “injured” and then taken to a local hospital, where the child tragically passed away. Law enforcement officers are interviewing witnesses into the events that led up to the child’s death.
Waihoro/Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board Chairwoman Karolyn Potter stated that the community was resilient and would support the family in mourning. Ms. Potter stated that this was a “sadness that’s beyond talking about.”
Spreydon Ward councilor Dr. Melanie Coker stated that she had only learned about the “absolutely heartbreaking” accident after seeing media reports and sent her condolences to the child’s family.
According to the police, the news report states that the child’s death is not being treated as a homicide.
The potential dangers of children play in or around clothes washing machines have been publicly reported. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there have been three or more washer-related deaths of toddlers aged five and younger in the past few years. However, there have been over 3,000 emergency room visits connected to washing machines.
Consumer Reports, a non-profit group, states that parents must teach their young children the dangers of appliances and keep the washers secure and unplugged. It’s also very important to explain the potential danger to anyone who is watching your children.
