Harmful levels of arsenic
UNITED STATES – June 24, 2020 – According to the theguardian.com, Consumer Reports conducted a chemical test of Starkey Spring Water brand of bottled water sold on Amazon.com. The test results showed the popular brand of bottled water has harmful levels of Arsenic, a toxic metal. Starkey Spring Water bottle water products were previously recalled for exceeding federal limits back in 2015. Although consuming a single bottle of Starkey Spring Water may not harm you, experts warn that regular consumption of trace amounts of toxic metals could pose dangerous health issues over extended periods of time. Whole Foods manufactures Starkey Spring Water, and the brand is sold in most Whole Foods US-based stores, and on Amazon.com.
Consumer Reports tested Starkey Spring Water samples back in 2019, finding Arsenic levels that approached or surpassed the federal allowable. The three Starkey Spring Water test samples fluctuated from 9.48 to 9.86 PPB of Arsenic. A fourth sample recorded 10.1 PPB of Arsenic. The test results provided by Consumer Reports are cited in two pending Starkey Spring Water arsenic lawsuits. According to Consumer Report’s chief scientific officer, exposure to heavy metals can lead to lower IQ scores in children, cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and other health issues.
The chemical test results produced and reported by Consumer Reports, and the Guardian illustrates the public dilemma of procuring affordable, clean, safe, and clean drinking water in the United States. Also, the test results show that expensive drinking water options may not necessarily equate to safer drinking water.
A spokesperson from the FDA stated that the arsenic levels Consumer Reports discovered in Starkey Spring Water meet the FDA’s allowable standard for the heavy metal. However, Consumer Reports noted that they tested over 45 brands of bottled water, and some of the brands contained no arsenic, and Starkey Spring Water was the only bottled water brand that exceeded 3 PPB in the Consumer Reports tests.
