Makers of M&M’s Recalled Boxes of Candies. Mars Chocolate North America, the makers of M&M’s, has recalled certain boxes of the candy across the country. According to press release posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website on September 19th, the recall was issued because some theater boxes labeled as “milk chocolate” actually contain peanut butter M&Ms, but peanut butter is not a listed allergen on the outside.
According to the release, the recall affects M&M’s Brand Theater Box 3.40 oz UPC #40000294764 with the following lot numbers: 417DH4JP09, 417EM4JP10, 417FM4JP09, 418AG4JP10, 418BG4JP10, 418CG4JP10, 418DM4JP09, 418EG4JP10, 417EG4JP09, 417FG4JP09, 417FM4JP10, 418AM4JP09, 418BM4JP10, 418CM4JP10, 418DM4JP10, 418EM4JP09, 417EG4JP10, 417FG4JP10, 418AG4JP09, 418AM4JP10, 418CG4JP09, 418DG4JP10, 418EG4JP09 and 418EM4JP10.
The recalled boxes were shipped to warehouses in 30 states between May 8 and July 1, 2014.
Life-Threatening Allergic Reactions
So far, there have been no adverse event reports related to the recall. Individuals who are allergic to peanuts can suffer serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they mistakenly consume a theater box containing a bag of peanut butter ‘M&M’s’. The issue came to light when a consumer reported that an M&M’s Brand Peanut Butter package with peanut butter M&Ms was found inside an ‘M&M’s’ Brank Milk Chocolate Theater Box.
The recalled ‘M&M’s’ are sold in cardboard boxes that are 3 inches by 6.5 inches. The lot number and best before date is stamped on the right-hand side.
If consumers bought a box of recalled M&Ms and have allergy concerns, they are advised to bring it back to the store where the item was purchased for a full refund.
