WASHINGTON, D.C. – According to an online news report posted on safetyandhealthmagazine.com, the number of product-related injuries requiring emergency medical treatment dropped by 24% during the first seven months of the coronavirus pandemic. According to a recently released report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the kinds of products that are causing injury are spiking in the number of severe injuries.
Medical researchers using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System reviewed emergency room visits that involved product-related injuries from March of 2020 to September 2020 and then compared that data to data from March of 2019 to September 2019.
The largest increase in injuries across all age groups involved fireworks and flares. Those injuries grew by about 56%. Injuries related to scooters, skateboards, and hoverboards grew by 39%. Severe injuries caused by accidents involving mopeds, minibikes, and all-terrain vehicles grew by 39%.
The research study also found that “button battery” injuries grew by about 93% in children ages 5 to 9. Cleaning agent injuries grew by 84%. Bicycle accident injuries grew by 1% in the youth age group but surged by 21% in people ages 40 and older.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that these numbers “highlight new patterns of risk that may have arisen during the pandemic.” The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s COVID-19 Safety Education Center web page provides helpful consumer safety tips regarding poisons, recalls, bicycles, micro-mobility devices, batteries, fireworks, and more.
According to Robert Adler, the acting director of the commission, the more data and resources we have can help make sure consumers are safer at home, at work, or at school.
