Recalled of Super Arthgold Due To Undeclared Ingredients. Nano Well-being Health Inc. is voluntarily recalling its Super Arthgold arthritis supplement due to undeclared ingredients that could lead to potentially-fatal adverse reactions. Super Arthgold is a dietary supplement marketed for joint pain and arthritis; it claims to have an “all-natural source formula and lists ingredients such as the organic compound MSM, a Chinese herb called Angelica sinensis and white peony. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, has found that the supplement contains several hidden ingredients, making the product an unapproved drug.
The recalled lots include lot L1P1-6100/Expiration date June 25, 2016 and lot L1P2-6000/Expiration date September 16, 2016. The product comes in 500 mg capsules and is packaged in bottles of 120 capsules. Super Arthgold was distributed to wholesalers nationwide.
According to the FDA press release, a laboratory analysis conducted by the agency found that the product contained the muscle relaxant chlorzoxazone and two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), diclofenac and indomethacin. The release warns about the dangers of having these unknown ingredients, stating that “Use of this product containing the undeclared drug ingredients has a reasonable probability of resulting in fatal adverse events in consumers and patients with underlying illnesses, including known allergy to the hidden ingredients, cardiac, gastrointestinal, hepatic, and renal conditions as well as patients who recently undergone cardiac bypass graft surgery.”
The FDA warns that hidden NSAIDS can be dangerous because consumers would not know that it is already present in the arthritis supplement and take another product containing an NSAID, unintentionally overdosing on the medication. As a result, the consumer would be at increased risk of NSAID adverse events, including heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, renal toxicity and bleeding, ulceration, or perforation of the stomach or intestines. Undeclared NSAIDs can also be problematic for users who should not take NSAIDs, such as those who are at risk for heart disease and gastrointestinal problems; they may take Super Arthgold thinking it is a safe substitute, when in fact they are getting the drug they intend to avoid.
The FDA says that consumers, distributors and retailers who have the recalled supplement should stop using it and return it to the place of purchase.
