Toxic Birdseed Manufacturer Admitted Using Illegal Pesticides
Most of the toxic birdseeds under investigation were manufactured by Scotts Miracle-Gro, the world’s largest marketer of lawn and garden care products. The company has pleaded guilty and admitted to federal charges that it knowingly sold various brands of birdseed products that were treated with Storcide II and Actellic 5E, two pesticides not suitable for grain intended for consumption by birds. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not cleared these pesticides for use in bird seed, making Scotts’ use of the chemicals illegal. Some 73 million units of these birdseed products were manufactured between November 2005 and January 2008. Though Scotts recalled the birdseed in 2008, only about 2 million units were returned. Many retailers were unaware of the recall, and it’s likely that some of these poisonous birdseed products were sold long after the recall.
Storcide II contains the active ingredient, chlorpyrifos-methy, while Actellic 5E contains the active ingredient pirimiphos-methyl. Both of these chemicals are known to be toxic to birds, fish and wildlife, and are cholinesterase inhibitors that result in overstimulation of the nervous system. Small doses of either poison cause symptoms that include nausea, dizziness, and confusion, and higher doses lead to respiratory paralysis and death. Chlorpyrifos-methyl is one of the many chemical poisons linked to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the mysterious bee collapse phenomenon that has been observed all across the world.
