Trampoline Spring Impalement
A 12-year-old boy who was bouncing on a friend’s trampoline almost lost his life in an accident that illustrates the dangers of backyard trampolines. According to the news report, a metal spring coil sprang free and struck the boy in the back, near his left shoulder blade. The spring coil struck the boy with such great force that the piece of metal dug about two inches into his back. First responders raced the boy to a local hospital for emergency medical procedures to remove the spring from the boy’s flesh.
The boy said he was jumping on a trampoline when he suddenly felt something heavy and strange strike him in the back. He did not know immediately that a metal spring dislodged from the trampoline and hit him. A photograph of the child’s left shoulder depicts a wound an inch or so away from his spine. The coil went two inches deep into his back. He was extremely fortunate. The pre-teen could have suffered a severe spinal cord injury if he was positioned just slightly to the right when the coil drove into him.
The boy’s father also recognizes how lucky he is that his son survived the ordeal. The man concluded that he would have lost his son if the spring struck the boy in the head or throat. The man said that his son was brave during the emergency procedure performed by emergency room doctors at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and during his recuperation. The boy’s father said that this incident highlights the dangers of a trampoline that is in disrepair pose to an unsuspecting child. The father said that parents should be mindful to cover the springs and close any gaps between fame and the jumping surface.
In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission released data suggesting that 94,000 people received treatments in emergency departments around the country in 2012 alone from trampoline accidents. Additionally, pediatric physicians suggest that children ages six and younger are at the greatest risk of suffering a trampoline-related injury.
