Cancer-Causing Chemicals in Food Products
A concerning issue has arisen in the UK as sweets imported from the United States, including popular brands like Jolly Ranchers and Swedish Fish, have been found to contain illegal and harmful ingredients. These candies, often advertised on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, have become sought-after stocking fillers, especially during holiday seasons. However, they contain carcinogenic and genotoxic ingredients that are banned by the UK government.
The problematic ingredients include mineral oil in Jolly Ranchers hard sweets, which can lead to cancer formation when contaminated with other compounds. Additionally, Mountain Dew was found to contain Calcium Disodium EDTA, a substance banned in UK beverages, which has been linked to adverse reproductive and developmental effects in animal studies and has associations with colon cancer.
Trading standards officers in Staffordshire, for instance, seized approximately £8,000 worth of these illegal sweets from 22 shops. Even local corner shops have been found selling banned confectionery, totaling over £300 in one raid. It’s important to note that some products can legitimately be on the UK market if they comply with food standards, but those found in these raids were “American branded and not destined for the UK.”
Parents in Manchester expressed their children’s love for candies from the US, often influenced by marketing tactics. However, many sellers of these sweets are unaware that they contain banned ingredients. What’s alarming is that these banned products aren’t limited to small independent shops; they have also been discovered in larger UK retailers and supermarkets.
The issue is compounded by the fact that imports of US sweets have increased significantly, with £25 million worth imported last year, a 70% increase compared to 2017. This rise in imports suggests that such products are making their way into the UK market more frequently, despite the presence of banned ingredients.
While the manufacturers of these candies, such as Lemonheads, Starburst Gummies, Hershey’s, and Jolly Ranchers, have stated that their products are produced legally in the USA, they emphasize that any products being sold in the UK are being done so illegally and are not associated with their brands. Mars, which manufactures Starburst Gummies, mentioned that it has been actively working to prevent unauthorized third-party importation of its products in the UK.
