Seattle Manufacturing Corporation Issues Recall of Kobah Ice Axes, Citing Potentially Dangerous Defect

Kobah Ice Ax Recalled

FERNDALE, WASHINGTON – As reported in an online news article published by www.prnewswire.com, Seattle Manufacturing Corporation has issued a recall of its Kobah Ice Axes, citing potential detachment of spike and/or head of the axes, which poses a risk of harm to users.

Seattle Manufacturing Corporation recently recalled certain Kobah Ice Axes in sizes 60, 65, 70, and 75 centimeters in length.  Each of the axes has a steel pick and adze (a smaller ax) connected at the top of an orange aluminum handle shaft by a black polyamide resin head with a steel spike in the bottom of the handle shaft.  The lot number for the affected Kobah axes is MLN 10864, which is printed on the handle of the axes.

Seattle Manufacturing Corporation received one report of a Kobah ax’s spike detaching from the handle.  However, no injuries have been reported.  The affected Kobah axes were sold at specialty climbing retailers along the west coast.  The axes were also sold online at www.smcgear.com, and all affected axes were sold between March 2019 and June 2019, with a price tag of approximately $100.

Seattle Manufacturing Corporation recalled the Kobah ice axes voluntarily and pursuant to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) Fast Track Recall process.  With the Fast Track Recall process, firms agree to voluntarily initiate recalls upon learning of potentially dangerous defects and commit to working alongside the CPSC to quickly announce recalls and remedy the situation as soon as possible.

Anyone with a Kobah ice ax subject to Seattle Manufacturing Corporation’s recent recall is instructed to immediately stop using the axes and return them to Seattle Manufacturing Corporation to receive a full refund. Seattle Manufacturing Corporation is also reaching out to all known customers to inform them of the recall and what steps to take.
