FDA – According to an online news report posted on foxbusiness.com, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded the agency’s growing list of potentially harmful hand sanitizer products to include three hand sanitizer products from Shane Erickson, Inc.
Shane Erickson, Inc. has issued a recall of three different hand sanitizer products due to methanol poisoning. Methanol is a toxic chemical that is used to manufacture antifreeze and fuel.
According to the FDA, methanol exposure causes vomiting, nausea, headache, permanent blindness, blurred vision, seizures, permanent damage to the nervous system, coma, or death. The FDA also warns consumers that if they are feeling any of these symptoms to seek “immediate treatment.”
Shane Erickson, Inc. is recalling lot 2020/05/11, and MFG: 2020/05/10 L/N: 20200510-3 of “imc Wash-Free Hand Sanitizer (in three sizes 50 ml, 100 ml, 300 ml), and Wash Free Hand Sanitizer 300 ml lot 2020/05/11, and Thrifty White Pharmacy Wash-Free Hand Sanitizer 300 ml lot 2020/05/11. All recalled products are listed in the table below. The hand sanitizer products have been recalled due to probable methanol (wood alcohol) contamination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that anyone using these products on their hands are at risk for methanol poisoning. According to the FDA’s warning notice, the recalled hand sanitizer products are used to reduce bacteria on the skin when soap and water are unavailable. The hand sanitizer products have been sold in clear or white opaque plastic bottles with either a clear, black, or blue cap.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been testing and updating its list of dangerous hand sanitizers that were supposed to contain ethanol but tested positive for methanol. The contaminated hand sanitizer products have been entering the market at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic as consumer demand for hand sanitized exploded. Currently, there are more than 220 hand sanitizer products that the FDA considers dangerous. In most cases, methanol is not listed on the label. The FDA also stated that methanol is toxic and can be life-threatening when consumed or used on the skin.
Shane Erickson, Inc. is contacting its customers and distributors by email/mail to arrange the return of all affected products. All consumers, retailers, and distributors that have recalled hand sanitizer products are asked to immediately discontinue sale, distribution, use, and to return the recalled products at the place of purchase.
