WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release on April 2, 2019 warning the public that the FDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service recalled over 20,000 pounds of ready to eat beef patties. The food processing company AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. from Enid, Oklahoma, participated in the Class II recall after receiving complaints from consumers that a purple-colored piece of soft plastic was in the patties they purchased. AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. said that their precooked and ready to eat hamburger patties should be discarded or returned to the store from which the consumer bought the item. The FDA and AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. said that no injuries or illnesses had been reported because of the plastic infiltration.

The press release distributed by the FDA indicates that AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. packaged the read-to-eat hamburger patties on November 30, 2018. The total weight of the potentially contaminated beef patties was over 20,000 pounds. More specifically, the lots subject to recall are the 14.06-pound cases of patties with 90 total patties in three 30-unit sleeves.

Several numbers appear on the box to help identify each lot. AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. said that the package code was 8334 and the code on the case is 155-525-0. Also, there is a stamp bearing the identifier EST. 2260E in the center of the USDA stamp.

The FDA said that the potentially contaminated items were shipped across the country to various food services. Therefore, food service consumers must carefully inspect the product information on the label to identify possibly contaminated beef.

AdvancePierre Foods, Inc. worked quickly to draw attention to the Class II recall. The company received two complaints on April 1, 2019, about purple plastic in the food. Although no injuries or deaths were reported, they decided to issue the recall out of caution.

A Class II recall is one that indicates personal health is not imminently at risk and the chance of injury is remote.
