For many people, food is constantly the subject of speculation and scrutiny. From E. coli to salmonella, many consumers buy products with an air of caution. This air of caution does not, however, protect against the obvious or straightforward risks of fundamentally unsafe food contaminants. This risk is encapsulated in the recent Procesadora La Hacienda recall that found dangerous contaminants in their canned meat.
Procesadora La Hacienda, a San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico establishment has been exposed by the U.S. Food And Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) to have shipped approximately 4,940 lbs of ready-to-eat corned beef products that may have been contaminated with metal shards.
The 10 lb boxes were shipped with two 5 lb packages marked as “Productos La Hacienda” with an expiration date of April 29th, 2019. The issues were discovered on March 7, of 2019 when a consumer complaint was sent in from the School Program of Puerto Rico when a shard of metal was found embedded in a chub of corned beef.
Following the revelation of the metal shard, the FSIS conducted an investigation into Procesadora La Hacienda and began the process of a recall.
The FSIS filed a report that they released on March 15th of 2019 stating that Procesadora La Hacienda would be forced to issue a Class I recall. A Class I recall is issued when a FSIS investigation finds that there is an imminent health hazard situation where there is a present and reasonable probability that the consumption or use of a product will cause serious, adverse effects on consumer’s health or death. The printed health risk on the site is classified as high.
One unique feature of this recall is the party at risk. The FSIS has expressed extreme concern at the status of this recall because the majority of the Procesadora La Hacienda recall product has been purchased by schools. School nutrition professionals have been urged to not prepare or consume these items and instead to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
