Dog pig ear treat
UNITED STATES – As reported in an online news article published by ktla.com, the FDA and CDC are advising dog owners to throw out pig ear treats that may be linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 127 people.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued a joint statement informing dog owners of a salmonella outbreak linked to pig ear treats. So far, there are reports of 127 people becoming ill. Multiple pig ear treat products tested positive for salmonella, and all were linked to human illnesses.
The salmonella outbreak that has sickened 127 people has reached 33 states. A total of 26 sickened people were hospitalized for treatment. Additionally, 24 children under the age of 5 have been sickened, but there are no reported deaths.
There have been 2 recalls of pig ear treats for potential salmonella contamination. One company, New Jersey-based Lennox International Inc., recently issued a voluntary recall of pig ear treats amid concerns about salmonella contamination. Another company, Pet Supplies Plus, recalled pig ear treats last month in bulk after a sample from a product in a store tested positive for salmonella.
State and federal regulators have not been able to identify one supplier/distributor as the source of the contaminated dog pig ear treats. Therefore, both the FDA and CDC are recommending that customers discard all pig ear treats regardless of brand.
Dogs can become ill by eating the contaminated pig ear treats, but dog owners can become ill by simply handling the treats or even by simply caring for a dog that ate a contaminated treat. The FDA and CDC have not provided any data on whether any dogs became ill from eating the pig ear treats.
