WEST BRIGHTON, NY- According to thehollywoodunlocked.com, 6-month-old Damaris Earps was being rushed to the hospital because he was suffering symptoms of the flu when the driver of the vehicle he was riding in ran a red light and the car was struck. Earps’ mother was holding the baby at the time of the accident.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Broadway and Forest Avenue at 2:40 a.m. early Saturday morning.
Damaris was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center but was pronounced dead from his injuries. Residents living near the intersection stated that the collision was so loud and powerful that it shook ceiling lamps in nearby apartments.
One neighbor also stated that the intersection where the accident occurred is not well designed and that other accidents have occurred in the same place.
Greater than 50% of all car accidents resulting in injuries or death occur at intersections. Car crashes are frighteningly common in the United States where there are about 6 million car accidents every year. 3 million people suffer car accident related injuries each year and over 90 people die every day in automobile collisions.
The three biggest causes of fatal car accidents are drunk driving, speeding and reckless driving, but distracted driving has become a bigger problem as a result of smartphones.
It is important to stay as safe as possible while on the road. Seatbelts can lower the risk of dying in a car accident by 45%, and greatly reduce the chance of suffering injuries or being ejected from a vehicle. Still, nearly one out of every seven people admit they do not use a seatbelt when driving or riding in a vehicle.
