Mass Destruction Contain Synthetic Anabolic Steroid. The dietary supplement product called Mass Destruction, which is marketed to athletes for body building and muscle growth, has been found to contain at least one synthetic anabolic steroid, according to the product label, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.
Anabolic steroids have long been associated with serious injury, including serious injuries to the liver.
Mass Destruction Tied to One Serious Injury
Mass Destruction has been tied to at least one report of serious liver illness, according to the FDA. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services advised the agency of the serious Mass Destruction liver illness, which involved a 28-year-old man who was diagnosed with liver failure and required a liver transplant after just several weeks of use. The agency stated that it was continuing to analyze the ingredients used in Mass Destruction.
Steroid, Prohormone Injuries
The marketing material for Mass Device describes the supplement as a “dual compound prohormone,” listing its main ingredients as 17a-methyl-1,4-androstadiene-3,17diol 13.33mg (also known as M1,4ADD) and 18-Methylestr-4-en-3-one-17b-ol 20mg (also known as 18 Nano), according to a Medical Daily report. Prohormones are anabolic steroids, precursors to hormones and, processed by the liver.
Prohormones are known for raising bad cholesterol levels and increasing risks for headaches, hypertension (high blood pressure), and dizziness. Because of this, many body builders recommend taking additional, so-called “cycle support” supplements to avoid liver damage. Prohormones are toxic to major organs and may lead to long-term damage, according to the Medical Daily report.
FDA Warns of Liver, Serious Injuries
The FDA advises that steroid-like substances and anabolic steroids are known for increasing risks for potential liver injury. “Products marketed as supplements that contain anabolic steroids pose a real danger to consumers,” said Howard Sklamberg, director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Some known adverse reactions linked to these substances, as well as to liver damage, are:
- Liver failure
- The need for liver transplant
- Unexplained fatigue
- Abdominal pain, back pain
- Discolored urine
- Adverse effects on blood lipid levels
- Increased risk of heart attack, stroke
- Masculinization in women
- Testicle shrinkage
- Breast enlargement
- Male infertility
- Short stature in children
