NEW YORK – According to Cdllife.com, a number of trucks were among the vehicles involved in a 21 vehicle crash that occurred on the New York Thruway, leading to the road being closed down on during the blizzard warning.
A ban was in place as of Tuesday night, and yet the trucks were still on the Thruway at the time of the collision, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon.
Images show trucks among the vehicles crashed on or to the side of the snow-covered roadway in the aftermath of the chain-reaction collision.
Reports indicate that there were injuries, but it is not clear how many people were hurt, or how severe those injuries were. One of the people injured was a New York State Police officer. The officer’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.
All eastbound lanes were closed because of the accident.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo warned that truck drivers who failed to abide by the ban would be cited. People posted multiple videos of trucks on the road in spite of the ban, and of police stopping and citing those trucks.
The wind creates risks for large trucks as it can cause them to sway or even topple over. The driving ban was expanded to additional roads and vehicles. The blizzard involved heavy snowfall, high wind speeds, and wind chills below zero making for dangerous conditions for all drivers.
Snow, sleet, and ice all contribute to thousands of crashes in the United States every year. In many situations, the best driving advice is to stay off the road until it is safer to drive.
