WHITE PLAINS, NY- USNews.com reports that a woman died in an accident with a parked construction truck early Monday morning. The collision took place on Interstate 287’s eastbound lanes in White Plains.
The victim was driving a 2018 Nissan SUV when she slammed into the back of a 1991 Ford F550. The crash took place at about 1:30 a.m.
Police identified the victim as Patricia Jimenez-Gaylor, 49, of Mamaroneck. Jimenez-Gaylor died at the site of the collision. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and received treatment. The force of the impact caused the construction truck to strike another construction vehicle. The trucks were damaged.
Rear-end collisions are extremely common and extremely preventable. Every year there around 1.7 million of these crashes take place on American roadways. Much of the time, the issue is that the driver is looking at a smartphone, but there are many other forms of distraction as well.
According to the National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB), most of the deaths and injuries could be avoided with collision avoidance systems. This technology involves sensors that alert the driver when they approach an object too closely or will automatically brake when the car gets too close to an object. The NTSB recommends that this technology come standard in all new vehicles.
