LOS ANGELES, CA – June 24, 2020 – According to an online news report published by furnituretoday.com, Modus Furniture International is recalling approximately 1,300 dressers due to the dresser’s defective design that may lead to tip-over, and entrapment accidents resulting in deaths or injuries to children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPCS) announced that the furniture units are unstable when the dresser’s mirror is not installed. The CPCS also stated that the dressers are not in compliance with one of the CPSC’s performance requirements of ASTM F2057-17. The CPSC announced that the unit’s tip-over restraint kits do not comply with the performance requirement, as stated in the U.S. voluntary industry standard F3096-14.
The dresser units that are being recalled are the bow-front dresser, the Brighton nine-drawer, the Bevelle nine-drawer dresser with tapered feet, and the Travis nine-drawer dresser. The recall only affects dressers manufactured from November 2017 through February 2019. The dressers are made with cherry and mahogany veneers and have satin, and nickel finished pull handles and knobs. Each dresser weighs approximately 245 pounds and is approximately 63 inches wide, 20 inches deep, and 41 inches high. The recalled dressers also have a label on the back showing Made in Indonesia, and the date of manufacturer.
The dressers being recalled were sold at furniture stores nationwide, including Costco. The dressers were also sold online from November 2017 through December 2019. The price of the dressers were between $700 and $1,100.
The CPSC has warned purchasers to keep children away from the recalled dressers until a repair has been made on the unit to make the unit safe. Purchasers may also contact the company and request a free compliant replacement tip-over restraint kit. Purchasers may also request a free, one-time in-home kit installation. According to the news report, Modus Furniture is in the process of contacting all of the known purchasers.
