Our firm is investigating potential lawsuits on behalf of patients who suffered from Xarelto side effects. According to a report by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), Xarelto has been associated with “serious, disabling or fatal injury,” including blood clots or thromboembolic events.

Xarelto is used to prevent blood clots, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism in patients who are undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery. Like Pradaxa, it is an alternative to warfarin (Coumadin), a much older anticoagulant.

ISMP QuarterWatch Report: Xarelto Linked to
Blood Clots and Pulmonary Embolism

The ISMP is a non-profit consumer safety group; several times a year, the organization issues a QuarterWatch report to update the public about the safety profile of suspect drugs. The report is based on data submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration through the agency’s Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS).  In October 2012, ISMP issued a QuarterWatch report for adverse events reported to the FDA during first quarter of the year. The report focused on four drugs, including Xarelto, Tekturna, Actos and Cymbalta.

Xarelto was associated with the greatest number of adverse events for the first quarter of 2012 with 356 reports of
“serious, disabling or fatal injury”. The ISMP stated that “the largest group of rivaroxaban cases described the development of severe blood clots in younger patients (median age 66) taking the anticoagulant drug after hip or knee replacement surgery.” According to the report, blood clots the predominant adverse event reported to the FDA for first quarter of 2012, accounted for 158 cases.

Like warfarin, Xarelto is approved to prevent deep vein thrombosis in patients who have undergone knee or hip replacement surgery. Deep vein thrombosis is when a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the leg. If a part of this clot breaks off, it can be swept into the bloodstream and become lodged in the lungs; this is known as a pulmonary embolism and may be a life-threatening condition.

More Lawsuits Added to Xarelto MDL, Litigation Moves Forward

Oct 10, 2016
Lawsuits continue to mount in the Xarelto multidistrict litigation (MDL) against Janssen, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, and Bayer AG. Plaintiffs in the MDL similarly allege that the anticoagulant Xarelto led to uncontrollable, sometimes fatal bleeding. The drug makers are accused of failing to disclose this risk to patients and their physicians. More than 7,000 lawsuits have been filed into the MDL in the Eastern District of Louisiana before Judge Eldon Fallon. Court documents indicate...

BMJ Investigation Drug Makers Knew of Faulty Device During Xarelto Trials But Failed to Warn

Oct 6, 2016
A British Medical Journal (BMJ) investigation has found that the makers of Xarelto, an anticoagulant that has spurred a number of personal injury lawsuits, knew about safety concerns with a medical device used in Xarelto clinical trials but failed to disclose this information. The clinical trial in question is the ROCKET-AF, in which researchers compared adverse events in Xarelto users to warfarin users. A device used in the trial, called the INRatio, was used to measure the amount of warfarin...

Xarelto has Higher Bleeding Risk Compared to Pradaxa Study Suggests

Oct 4, 2016
A study published online in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that patients taking Xarelto had a slightly higher risk of bleeding compared to patients taking Pradaxa. Both of these medications are new generation blood thinners used to reduce the risk of life-threatening blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm. These drugs have emerged as a replacement for the decades-old warfarin. Warfarin is difficult to monitor, which is why patients taking this...

Xarelto Lawsuits Increase in Number with No Sign of Abatement

Sep 29, 2016
Judge Eldon Fallon has extended the filing deadline for certain classes of plaintiffs in In Re Xarelto Product Liability Litigation MDL #2592. The first bellwether trials for those cases are scheduled for February 2017. Without exception these cases allege that the Xarelto manufacturer, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and distributors, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in the United States, and Bayer overseas, knowingly put patients at risk for uncontrollable bleeding. The U.S. Food and Drug...
