Recent recall of approximately 1,200 Bugaboo Dragonfly Seat Strollers underscores safety concerns in “parent-facing” mode.

Bugaboo has announced a recall of its Dragonfly Seat Strollers, affecting about 1,000 units in the United States and an additional 200 in Canada, as of December 07, 2023. The recall addresses a significant safety concern: in the stroller’s “parent-facing” mode, the backrest of the seat may unexpectedly move downward. This malfunction can cause an unrestrained infant to potentially tumble out of the seat, posing a risk of injury.

The recall pertains specifically to the seat component of the Bugaboo Dragonfly Seat Strollers. The strollers, which can accommodate either a seat or a bassinet, feature seats measuring about 11.8 inches in width and 22.8 inches in length. Available in black, gray, or forest green, the affected units are identifiable by their serial numbers, which start with specific sequences listed in the recall notice.

Owners of these strollers can locate the serial number on a label under the seat and on the underside of the stroller’s chassis. To verify if their unit is included in the recall, consumers can check the serial number online at Bugaboo’s dedicated recall page.

In response to this issue, Bugaboo urges consumers to immediately stop using the recalled seats. The company is providing a free replacement stroller seat and has begun contacting all known purchasers and retailers directly.

So far, Bugaboo has received one report of the seat backrest moving downward in the United States and seven similar reports in South Korea. Fortunately, there have been no injuries reported in the U.S. related to this issue. The recalled strollers were available for purchase at children’s specialty stores nationwide and online at Bugaboo’s website from May 2023 through June 2023. The seat strollers were priced at about $900, while the bassinet strollers with seats were around $1,100. Bugaboo North America Inc., based in New York, is the importer of these China-manufactured strollers.

Legal Recourse for Injured Consumers

The malfunctioning Bugaboo Dragonfly Seat Strollers present a tangible injury risk, particularly to unrestrained infants. Consumers who have experienced harm due to this defect may consider pursuing a product liability lawsuit for damages.

In such a lawsuit, it is necessary to demonstrate that the product was inherently flawed and that this flaw was the direct cause of the injury. This legal process involves evidence collection, initiating a lawsuit, engaging in discovery, and possibly proceeding to trial.

The role of an attorney in these cases is critical. An attorney can guide the affected parties through the legal system, ensuring their rights are protected and that they effectively navigate the complexities of the case.

Victims may be eligible to recover compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other related costs. In some cases, punitive damages may also be pursued to penalize the manufacturer for negligence.
