A study conducted by the Boston University School of Public Health suggests that women’s reproductive capacity might be compromised by the use of chemical hair straighteners. This addition to the existing body of research illuminates the possible harm inflicted by cosmetics’ chemical components on reproductive wellbeing.
The study, reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology, brings attention to racial disparities in exposure to harmful cosmetic chemicals and subsequent health complications.
The research underscores that Black and Hispanic individuals are more likely to employ these products at a younger age, more frequently, and for an extended duration compared to other racial and ethnic groups. The disparities in hazardous chemical exposure across races were highlighted. Societal pressures to conform to Western beauty ideals, along with workplace and educational constraints on Afrocentric hairstyles, were mentioned by the authors.
Scientists analyzed data from the Pregnancy Study Online (PRESTO), focusing on women considering pregnancy and their use of hair relaxers. This ongoing research project, active since 2013, recruits participants from across North America, tracking them from pre-conception up to six months post-childbirth. The latest study on hair relaxers included responses from over 11,000 individuals, documenting their usage between 2014 and 2022.
Those who used hair relaxers were found to face increased chances of delayed conception. Among Black and Hispanic respondents, Black individuals reported more prevalent usage of hair relaxers, both presently and historically. A significant portion of the Black respondents indicated first using a relaxer before reaching 10 years old.
In a public missive, L’Oréal, a cosmetics industry leader, was asked to withdraw its hair relaxers popular among Black women, following research indicating a potential link to elevated cancer risk. However, the company asserted the safety of their products and rejected the supposed risks associated with their hair relaxers.
In their findings, the Boston University researchers concluded that frequent and long-term use of hair relaxers, and instances of scalp burns from these treatments, were associated with lower chances of conception. Certain chemicals found in relaxers, such as phthalates, phenols, and parabens, might be contributing to these reproductive challenges.
Even so, additional research is necessary to comprehensively understand the relationship between fertility and the chemical constituents of hair products.
