The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into nearly 900,000 General Motors (GM) trucks and SUVs equipped with the L87 V8 engine over concerns of potential engine failure. The affected vehicles include 2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras, as well as 2021–2024 Chevrolet Tahoes, Chevrolet Suburbans, GMC Yukons, and Cadillac Escalades.
The investigation stems from 39 complaints of engine rod bearing failures that resulted in engine seizures or breaches of the engine block. While no crashes or injuries have been reported, the risk of losing motive power while driving poses a significant safety hazard. If the investigation reveals systemic flaws, GM could face a large-scale recall and potential liability for damages caused by the defect.
At Parker Waichman LLP, we are dedicated to helping those impacted by defective products, including dangerous vehicle malfunctions. If you or someone you love has suffered losses due to GM’s engine failure issue, call 800-968-7529 for a free consultation. Our experienced attorneys can guide you through your legal options and fight to secure the compensation you deserve.
The NHTSA’s investigation is currently in the preliminary evaluation phase, which aims to determine the scope and severity of the engine failure problem. The defect reportedly lies in the 6.2L L87 V8 engine, which powers some of GM’s most popular vehicles.
Complainants describe catastrophic failures, such as engine seizure or rod breaches, occurring without prior warning signs. This raises serious concerns about the safety and reliability of these vehicles, as sudden engine failure can result in a loss of vehicle control and an increased risk of accidents.
The affected L87 engines are assembled at GM’s Tonawanda Propulsion plant in Buffalo, New York, and are installed in vehicles at the company’s Arlington Assembly plant in Texas. Although quality control measures are in place, it is unclear why this defect was not identified during production or testing.
If the NHTSA concludes that the defect poses a safety risk, GM could be required to issue a recall, potentially impacting hundreds of thousands of vehicles and resulting in significant financial and legal consequences for the company.
A sudden engine failure poses severe risks for drivers and passengers. Losing motive power in traffic can lead to collisions, putting lives and property at risk. Even in non-accident scenarios, engine malfunctions leave drivers stranded, causing inconvenience, towing expenses, and repair costs.
For many families and businesses that rely on these vehicles for work and daily life, engine failure can have broader financial implications. Repair costs for engine seizures or breaches often run into thousands of dollars, and vehicle downtime can disrupt livelihoods.
Furthermore, the lack of detectability before failure adds another layer of frustration and concern for vehicle owners, as regular maintenance and inspections offer no guarantee of avoiding the defect.
Consumers harmed by defective GM vehicles may have legal grounds to pursue a product liability lawsuit against the company. Product liability laws hold manufacturers accountable for defects in design, manufacturing, or failure to warn consumers of potential risks.
