Hair Treatments and Elevated Cancer RisksThe National Institutes of Health has conducted a study, revealing a correlation between the regular use of specific hair products and a heightened risk of uterine cancer.

After a study indicated a potential link between hair straighteners and certain hormonal cancers, many women are reconsidering their beauty regimes. Numerous individuals have joined a nationwide lawsuit against several beauty corporations over their products. Madison Carter, from Action 9, delved into the research and found out what you need to know prior to scheduling your next salon visit.

Chemical straighteners have allowed individuals to modify their hair texture and style in order to keep up with contemporary trends. Dre Remsuer, a stylist based in Charlotte, initially came across the research caution several months ago.

“I’ve been working with relaxers since 1987,” said Ramseur.

She started having the products applied to her hair around 1984 and continued this practice until the previous year.

Jacqueline Greer, a resident of Cornelius, also began using chemical relaxers in the 80s. After her diagnosis with endometriosis in 2020, a uterine disorder, she is now filing a lawsuit over the relaxers.

According to the lawsuit uncovered by Carter, Greer is seeking more than $75,000 in damages from L’Oréal, Soft Sheen and Avlon, the manufacturers of well-known box relaxers available for purchase in stores.

The lawsuit asserts that Greer’s diagnosis of endometriosis was due to “extended exposure to….chemicals present in the defendant’s hair products.”

This is one of an increasing number of lawsuits nationwide asserting that L’Oreal and other corporations are selling products associated with health issues. These lawsuits have emerged following the study by the National Institutes of Health involving over 33,000 women. The research also discovered that women who utilized chemical hair straighteners had double the risk of developing uterine cancer.

Nonetheless, medical professionals emphasize that this type of cancer is relatively uncommon.

The study also found that the majority of women who reported usage of chemical straightening products were black, due to the early introduction and frequent usage of relaxers among black girls.

“Box relaxers were designed for consumers, not professionals,” Ramseur explained.

According to Ramseur, when it comes to chemical straighteners, application and scalp protection prior to chemical application are key.

“I strongly discourage individuals from buying chemicals from retail stores and instead advise them to consult a professional,” Ramseur stated. “And when you visit your professional — scrutinize the professional.”

While the research identified a link between product use and cancer development, the researchers also admitted that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to prove it was the cause of the damage.

Carter failed to contact Greer and her legal team did not reply to comment requests.

In response to Greer’s lawsuit, L’Oréal stated that they maintain the highest safety standards for their products. Read their complete statement below:

“We place utmost importance on the health, wellness, and safety of all our consumers. We are certain of the safety of our products and believe that the recent lawsuits filed against us lack scientific or legal validity. L’Oréal enforces the highest safety standards for all its products. Our products undergo a rigorous scientific evaluation for safety by experts who also ensure strict adherence to all regulations in every market in which we operate.”

How to know if you can take legal action?

Determining whether you can take legal action depends on a variety of factors. Here’s a general guide, but remember, it’s always best to consult with one of our product injury lawyers to get advice tailored to your situation.

  1. Is there a valid claim? For a legal action to be possible, there must be a valid legal claim. This means you must have suffered some form of harm or injury, which could be physical, emotional, or financial.
  2. Who is responsible? You must be able to identify the person or entity responsible for the harm. This could be an individual, a company, or a government agency.
  3. Can they be held legally accountable? It’s not enough to identify who is responsible; they must also be legally liable. This generally means they had a duty of care towards you and they breached that duty, resulting in your harm.
  4. Is it worth it? Even if you have a valid claim and can identify a liable party, you should also consider the costs and benefits of taking legal action. This includes potential legal fees, the amount of time the case may take, the emotional toll, and the likelihood of winning the case.
  5. Is it within the legal timeframe? Legal claims must be brought within a certain timeframe, known as the statute of limitations. This varies depending on the type of claim and the jurisdiction, but if too much time has passed, you may be barred from filing a lawsuit.
  6. Gather evidence: You’ll need to gather any evidence that supports your claim. This could include photographs, witness statements, official reports, and any other documentation related to your case.
  7. Consult with our lawyers: Finally, if you believe you have a valid legal claim, you should consult with one of our caring attorneys. We can provide advice tailored to your specific situation, help you understand your legal rights and options, and guide you through the process of filing your claim.

Remember, laws vary greatly from state to state, and this is just a general guide. Always consult with one of our legal professionals to understand your specific situation.
