Empower Brands, the manufacturer of the PowerXL dual-basket air fryer, has issued a recall of approximately 319,000 units due to a serious burn hazard. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that a plastic U-Channel connector used to optionally combine the air fryer’s dual baskets can break during use. This design defect exposes users to hot food, liquids, or surfaces, significantly increasing the risk of burns.
The recall affects the DUAF-10 and DUAF-005 models sold between August 2021 and October 2023 at major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Kohl’s, as well as online. As of now, there have been at least 41 reports of the connector breaking, including three incidents where users suffered burns.
Parker Waichman LLP is now investigating legal claims from consumers nationwide who have been injured while using a PowerXL air fryer. If you or a loved one sustained burns or other injuries while using one of the recalled models, you may be eligible for compensation.
The recall involves two specific models:
Both models feature two cooking baskets that can be used separately or combined into a single large basket using a plastic U-Channel connector. These units are available in black or cinnamon and include a silver “PowerXL” label on the front. The model number can be found either on a white label located on the bottom of the appliance or on its power cord.
The defective component is the plastic U-Channel connector that links the two cooking baskets for simultaneous use. According to the recall, this plastic piece can fracture during operation, especially when the unit reaches high cooking temperatures. When the connector fails, the baskets may separate abruptly, allowing hot food or cooking surfaces to shift or spill.
This malfunction exposes users to hot grease, steam, or surfaces, posing a serious risk of burns. The air fryer’s function as a high-temperature cooking appliance makes this design flaw especially dangerous. The CPSC reported that Empower Brands received 41 complaints of the product breaking during use. Three of these incidents resulted in burn injuries, indicating a clear pattern of potential harm.
Consumers purchased the recalled PowerXL air fryers both in-store and online at major national retailers, including:
The units were sold between August 2021 and October 2023, with prices ranging from $60 to $190 depending on the model. If you purchased a PowerXL dual-basket air fryer during that time, you should stop using it immediately and verify whether it is part of the recall.
Empower Brands advises consumers to stop using the recalled models immediately. Consumers are instructed to contact the company to begin the refund process. The recall registration website is www.prodprotect.com/recall/duaf, or consumers may call the company toll-free at 866-704-9370 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday.
The recall process includes:
Although a refund may compensate you for the cost of the appliance, it does not cover injuries, medical bills, lost wages, or pain and suffering caused by a defective product.
If you were burned while using a PowerXL DUAF-10 or DUAF-005 air fryer, you may have a claim for damages. Injuries caused by design defects are grounds for a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer, importer, or distributor. In this case, Empower Brands, LLC may be held liable for distributing a defective appliance that caused injury.
Burn injuries can range in severity from minor first-degree burns to more serious second- or third-degree burns requiring emergency care or long-term treatment. Even non-severe burns may result in scarring, emotional distress, and financial loss due to time missed from work or high medical costs.
