Though thousands of individuals were injured and killed on September 11, 2001, tens of thousands more have been diagnosed with chronic illnesses since the attacks. For these victims, their exposure to toxic dust and other substances at the crash sites is primarily responsible for their diagnoses. For those who lived, worked, volunteered, attended school, or otherwise spent time in the area around Ground Zero in the months after the terrorist attacks, their exposure to the toxic chemicals that hovered in the air likely led to their illnesses. Many of these illnesses take several years or longer to develop.
In 2015, President Barack Obama signed a bill that reauthorized the James Zadroga Health and Compensation Act of 2010, as well as the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund. Under these funds, eligible victims may be able to obtain compensation for their injuries.
The victims must prove that they worked or volunteered at one of the crash sites, or that they lived, volunteered, worked, or attended school in the New York City exposure zone. The New York City exposure zone generally encompasses the area of Manhattan south of Canal Street, from the Hudson River over to Clinton Street. This area is thought to have been most impacted by the toxic chemicals that remained in the air after the World Trade Center fell.
The victims must also provide documentation that shows they have been diagnosed with an injury that is compensable under the funds. Other and unspecified types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma are noted in the list of eligible illnesses.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer which begins growing in white blood cells. White blood cells help fight off infections within the body, so a disease that impacts the white blood cells makes a person much more susceptible to health problems.
There are two primary types of lymphocytes, or white blood cells, in the body. These are called T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma may stem from either type of lymphocyte.
Since lymph tissue is located throughout the body, this type of cancer may begin anywhere. For example, the lymph nodes, thymus, bone marrow, spleen, adenoids, tonsils, and digestive tract all contain lymph tissue.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma may grow slowly, or it may be more aggressive. It depends on the specific type of lymphoma that is diagnosed.
Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma may include:
Other symptoms may also emerge.
To ensure you obtain the maximum amount of compensation available under the funds, you should consult an experienced 9/11 injury attorney as soon as possible. Without an attorney, you may not receive all of the money that you are entitled to receive.
