Car Crash In Southhold, One Man Died. A head on collision in Southold on Saturday, September 3, left one man dead and a woman seriously injured. The Massapequa man, age 31, was driving a Honda coupe north on Main Bayview Road near the Williamsburg Drive intersection, when he went out of his left lane and struck a southbound SUV driven by Antigone Amengual, 66, according to Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley.
Colin Ryan, the driver of the Honda, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident shortly after 11:30 a.m. Ms. Amengual of Southold, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for undisclosed injuries.
“It took the fire department about an hour and a half to free her from the vehicle,” Mr. Flatley said. “It was the worst possible scenario as far as damage.”
There were no passengers in either of the vehicles. The investigation is continuing and police have interviewed a witness. Greg Markotsis, previously a Hicksville Fire Department volunteer, was in the area when he heard the crash. He said it was apparent the man died instantly.
Antigone Amengual was able to talk. She said, “He just swerved into me….It looked like he lost control of the car.” Dianne Wamsley, retired Navy nurse and a former Huntington Fire Department EMT, was next on the scene. She saw the woman was oriented, alert and remarked her airway was good.
When Wamsley moved to the second car, she “All I could see was his head and it looked like he was cyanotic.” Cyanosis is indicated by a bluish or purplish discoloration of the skin, due to deficient oxygenation of the blood., indicating the victim was gone.
Wamsley said there had been a number of accidents on the road in the past year, and that the 35 mile per hour speed limit should be even lower.
